Introduction to Grinding Pump

The Grinding Pump includes a cutting mechanism that cuts harder solids into smaller pieces, creating a slurry that is easier to pass through the pipe. Because the conveying medium is ground or cuts relatively finely, it can be pumped to a higher height than the general sewage pump. For this reason, Grinding Pumps tend to use more power and are more expensive.

A key feature of Grinding Pumps is their cutting mechanism, which tends to come in two forms: axial and radial. The radial cutting mechanism is a more traditional cutter type, and the axial is the newer cutting-edge technology.

Grinding Pump Design

A floating system is the most common way to start and stop a pump. When the sewage reaches a specified level in the wet well, the pump starts. After evacuation to the desired level, the pump is turned off. Some Grinding Pumps are designed so that when the pump is turned off, all of the cut debris remains inside the dip ring. 


When the pump was turned back on, the unit had to fight against the rags being pulled into the pump. These units are more likely to be blocked. The dip ring consists of a number of teeth on the outer diameter of the rotating element. Unfortunately, the grooves between the teeth fill with debris, reducing the effectiveness of the Grinding Pump and eventually clogging. Additionally, these units require periodic adjustments to ensure cutting tolerances are maintained. Breaking the crumbs into small pieces is more effective than grinding or chewing. A grinding Pump with a double-acting cutting system is required. Because the close tolerance of the tool prevents larger items (such as 2×4) from entering the pump. However, the cutter will "bite" out of a large rag until it can fit through the pump.
